Trademark registration in South Africa: It is possible to file an intent-to-use application in South Africa. The trademark registration procedure lasts 42 months. After the acceptance the trademark will be published in the Journal. The opposition period is within 3 months. The protection lasts 10 years from the filing date.

Trademark renewal in South Africa: The trademark renewal may be done within 6 months before expiry date with a late renewal period of 1 year. For the trademark renewal we need the simply signed power of attorney. After renewal the protection lasts 10 years.

Trademark assignment in South Africa: For the trademark assignment we need the power of attorney signed by the assignee, the deed of assignment signed by both parties with Goodwill. There is no tax implication, no stamp duty. The assignment must be done with or without Goodwill. Pending application may be assigned. Unregistered marks may be assigned. 
Trademark use in South Africa: Non-use for 5 years following registration makes the registration vulnerable to cancellation.
