Service platform for Macau and Overseas Chinese

As economic globalisation develops countries around the world become more reliant upon each other. The use of information technology saves time and reduces the distances providing a convenient way to make contacts. In the near future the world will be completely linked to the network of the World Wide Web.

Overseas Chinese business people from all sectors have made remarkable achievements because they are able to keep abreast of business trends and excel at seeing trade opportunities.

To allocate the recourses effectively, to decrease the operation cost and to grab off the global special Chinese business opportunities is an other opportunity for economic and trade. The 21st century will probably see China becoming the world's factory and purchasing centre therefore to make the most of the business opportunities there as well as globally, companies will need to lode closely at the allocation of resources and how to reduce operational costs.

1. Advanced Economic and Trade Networks:

Historically, trade between Macao and the west began about 400 years ago. Gradually, Macao became a place for economic activities, cultural and personal exchanges and co-operation between it and the west. Moreover, there are also close economic links between Macao and some 100 countries and regions including the USA, the European Union, Portuguese-speaking countries, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and some Southeast Asian countries. The relationship between Macao and these countries and regions has remained good over the years, especially the EU and the Portuguese speaking countries. In addition some 40,000 overseas Chinese, about 10% of Macao's population, have settled here. Among these are entrepreneurs most of whom emigrated here in the 60s and 70s from various parts of SE Asia. Since then there a close bond has been built between Macao and SE Asia.

2. The Bridge for China-Taiwan Cross-Straits Interaction:

As Taipei's representative in Macao, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre issues visas and provides other tourism services to local people, Mainland citizens and overseas visitors travelling to Taiwan via Macao. The Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Macao SAR as the representative of central government in Macao issues visas for Taiwanese to visit the Mainland China. Importantly, direct flights from Macao to Taiwan will still be a convenient route for travellers from both regions before the implementation of the direct transportation links across the Taiwan Straits.

3. Macao's Advantages

Macao is fortunate to have possessed a relatively advantageous geographical location. Bordering Mainland China it takes only 10 minutes by car to reach Zhuhai with Hong Kong only an hour away by jet foil in the opposite direction. For tourists travelling the region it is only about a two-hour flight from Macao to other South East Asian destinations including Taiwan. Transportation is quite convenient for travelling to neighbouring areas using Macao as a transit point.

4. Advanced System

Macao is a free and open economy with the status as an independent tax zone and one of the freest ports in the world. Using the name China Macao it is able to become a member of numerous international institutions, be involved in international affairs and sign international treaties as an independent entity. This allows Macao to widen external relationships in respect of economic, trade, finance, aviation, culture, education, technology, environmental protection and hygiene.

5. Freedom of Movement

The economy and trade must involve the freedom of the movement of population, information, capital and logistics (see Table 1for the details of these).

6. Relatively Lower Operating Costs

Business people are always concerned about operating costs so it is very advantageous that these are lower here when compared to neighbouring regions (see Table 2 for the details of these).

7. Harmonious society

Macao is a culturally and racially diverse society where all the ethnic groups live together in total harmony. There are Chinese, Portuguese, Manses, Chinese immigrants from other nationalities all working and living together with no friction, For instance Chinese Confucianism and Western Chrisman religions co-exist quite happily, while you will also hear many languages being spoken such as Cantonese, southern Fujian dialect, Portuguese, English, Mandarin, tag log and Thai to name a few.

8. Wealth of Professional Personnel

Since Macao has engaged in trade with the west for many years, wealth of experience has been built and honed. As a result, large numbers of professionals who understand the international market and are qualified in the fields of accounting, law and finance and are familiar with the international conventions are trained. In addition, there are many people fluent in Mandarin, English and Portuguese

The Macao SAR government has adopted an economic development strategy beginning with the gaming-tourism industry as the leader of the economic growth, the service sector as the major sectors and with the other sectors co-ordination and development with them. Such a strategy will establish a solid base for the development of Macao's service industry. A favourable business environment will attract business people from around the world to set-up operations here. Importantly, Macao also provides commercial or auxiliary offshore services.

Following the liberalisation of Macao's gaming industry, the development of MICE*(meeting, incentive tours, conference and exhibition) industry in Macao will be strengthened.

The International Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention 2002, which was jointly held by the International Association of Chinese Traders, Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute and the International Commercial Association of Portuguese Speaking Entrepreneurs. Research has shown that the number of international business conventions held here is increasing. In October the Macao International Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention 2003 will be held. The annually held Macao International Trade and Investment Fair (MIF) has grown into a well-established trade exhibition platform for businesses from around the world. It is believed that following the development of the MICE industry; a culture of international institutions jointly holding exhibitions and conferences in Macao will gradually be formed.

As previously mentioned, the advantages of Macao are very obvious. Moreover, the World Federation of Chinese Entrepreneurs Organisation has established a liaison office in Macao. This liaison office will establish a communication and co-operation platform for the Chinese entrepreneurs. They can then share and exchange ideas and co-operate to explore new business opportunities. As a result, Chinese entrepreneurs can build a wonderful future at the start of the 21st Century.
