根據澳大利亞2001年的公司法，每個澳洲公司都必須有一個9位數的號碼—ACN。ACN就像公司的身份證一樣在某些文件上，ACN被要求強制顯示。新公司必須向澳大利亞的安全投資委員會（ASIC）申請ACN。 在如下文件中，必須出示ACN號：

當你向供應商買貨時，必須要求其出示ABN號和保留相關的收據。一般而言，發票上有ABN號。某些供應商是ABN管理條例之外的，如果你不確定，可以向其索要書面證明。如果供應商不出示ABN號，你也不知道他是否ABN例外，或者你懷疑他的ABN號是否正確，這時候，你可以扣壓達到46.5%的貨款。

ABN和ACN相近而不同，頗有些令人迷惑，在下當年注冊時愣是沒有弄清楚——也不敢說現在完全明白了。有人根據中文的情景理解為責任方不同，比如ABN的責任承擔人在個人，ACN的責任承擔主體在公司。姑且存此一說，但是目前還沒有找到相關證據支撐，不曉得是不是要去翻閱有關法規。從目前查找到的官方資料看，ABN管的是生意往來，只要從事商業活動都得有ABN，由于涉及到稅收，所以歸澳稅務機關管理。ACN管的是公司，與自然人不一樣的行為主體，所以由安全投資委員會管。就現在看到的，持ABN從事生意組織或者個人很多，持ACN的少，不知道是不是沒顯示出來。也有公司用兩個號碼的，不知道有了ACN后是不是還必須申請ABN。

When will you use your ABN?
Examples of when you may need to use your ABN include:

when dealing with the Tax Office (the ABN is quoted as a reference)
in the future, when dealing with other government agencies subsection 3 (1) New Tax System (Australian Business Number) Act 1999
so that other businesses will not withhold tax at the top marginal rate from payments they make, and
when supplying goods and services to other businesses (and other entities carrying on enterprises).

Benefits of the ACN
Under the Corporations Act 2001, every company in Australia has been issued with a unique, nine-digit number, an Australian Company Number (ACN), which must be shown on a range of documents. The purpose of the ACN is to ensure adequate identification of companies when transacting business. New companies are issued with numbers by the Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC) upon registration.

The ACN is generated using an algorithm with the last digit being a check digit allowing the number to be verified.

A company's ACN should appear on all of its 'public documents' and 'eligible negotiable instruments' [s.153]. The items on which it should appear include:
all documents required to be lodged with ASIC;
statements of account, including invoices;
receipts (which are not machine-produced);
orders for goods and services;
business letterheads;
official company notices;
cheques, promissory notes and bills of exchange; and
written advertisements making a specific offer which is capable of being accepted (such as by the completion of an order form).
If a company's name appears on two or more pages of a document or instrument, the ACN must be shown on the first of those pages following the company's name.

Where a number of separate companies are listed on a document (eg, a letterhead) the ACN of each should appear and in such a way that makes clear the company to which each ACN relates.

While there are no specific requirements as to how an ACN should appear on a document, it should be clear, easily readable, and obvious as to the company to which it relates.

The ACN should be identified by the words 'Australian Company Number', or by the abbreviations 'ACN' or 'A.C.N.'.
